Personalizing a Competition – Chris

Last year afforded both me and my team opportunities to reflect on who we are, what is important for our studio, and how we move forward when it comes to connecting and collaborating with our clients. As we enter our 10th year of b Architecture Studio, our tagline: Listen-Communicate-Create resonates stronger. Our designs begin with knowing our clients, writing their story and understanding that it starts with them.

Right before the end of the year, a design competition came across my email that sparked my interest. I can’t share yet what it is, but it’s an industry that I know well and when done successfully, brings people together. So, here’s the “catch.” With this competition, the “Listen-Communicate-Create” becomes more challenging, as we don’t have the luxury of connecting with the key people who will use the new space. Instead, the vernacular will help guide us to better understand the climate, culture, and materials needed to design this project successfully.

The exciting part of this facility’s design will be creating the human experience; the procession and path, and the welcome and story of the facility. Where people sit, stand, mingle, and engage. Like many of our projects, we will delve deep into the details and design, such as the tables and seating, storage and the functions they serve to support. The overall experience will need to provide a link from inside to outside and back inside.

The final submission is due at the end of the spring and we look forward to sharing our process, research, people, and the final designs with you this summer.
